Northern Tanzania Safaris

Tanzania continually ranks as the best destination for safaris. With over 30% of its land under wildlife protected status, the country is home of 20% of all Africa's wild large mammals. Tanzania's best safari destinations are in the north. Leading the list are Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. Visitors will also not be dissapointed with Tarangire National Park - the park with the greatest concentration of elephants in Africa. Lake Manyara National Park, Arusha National Park, and Mkomazi National Park, and Lake Natron are also options. Cultural destinations include visits to a Maasai village, a walking tour in the village of Mto wa Mbu, or spending the morning with the Hadzabe tribe, one of the last true hunter-gatherer tribes left in the world, as they hunt with bow and arrow and harvest wild honey.

Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) is conveniently located between the town of Moshi and the city of Arusha as the best airport to start your safari. The location of these destinations make a combining a safari with a Mt Kilimanjaro or Mt Meru climb very possible. Even a one day safari is possible from Moshi or Arusha for some of the destinations. Ark Adventures specializes in bespoke itineraries and we are very happy to work with you on creating the ideal itinerary for you.

Ark Adventures operates all of its safaris itself. It does not sub-contract its safaris. We will not add anyone to your safari unless you request that we find others to join you. Even then, you would be informed in advance.

Safari Destinations

  • The oldest national park in Tanzania. Often visiting a place that is so famous it is easy to be let down. That is not the case with the Serengeti. It indeed deserves all its reuputation as the best safari destination in the world. No matter what time of the year you go, there will be excellent game viewing. The park is quite large. In fact the word Serengeti is derived from the Maasai word meaning "endless plain". From north to south is approximately 160 km (100 miles) and covers nearly 15,000 sq. km (5,700 sq. miles). With the neighboring protected areas not officially part of the park it covers more than 30,000 sq. km (12,000 sq. miles). By comparison, Kenya's Maasai Mara covers just 1,510 sq. km. Even in the busiest times, it is easy to find secluded areas for game drives if you desire the solitude, let us know.

Certain portions are at their best at specific times of the year due to the presence of the Great Migration. Central Serengeti (Seronera) is a reliable option year round. Northern Serengeti (Kogatende) is spectacular during the months of July - October when the Great Migration herds are present. Other months there is also good animal viewing, but not worth traveling several hours further to reach there when the same expereince can be found in closer portions of the Serengeti. Kogatende is the location of the Mara River, where the wildebeest cross to reach fresh grazing land. The timing of the crossing is depeendent on the rains so it is a little unpredictable. But during the July - October time period it is highly likely that there will be a huge number of migrating wildebeest, zebra, and antelope. Usually during the month of May, the migration herds are passing though what is called the "Western Corridor", a portion of the Serengeti that estends westward. Here the migration encounters the Grumeti River. This is not as spectacular as the Mara River crossing since the Grumeti is not continuous and herds can find alternatives to swimming through the river (but there are plenty of crocodiles for any that try to make its way across). The huge number of animals during the Month of May - June does make for excellent game viewing regardless. During the months of January - March, the migration herds are in the southern Serengeti in an area named Ndutu which straddles the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Conservation Area. They stay here gathering strength and waiting for the wildebeest to give birth. When conditions are right, in a 3 week period, over 400,000 calves will be born. This is a very active time for predators. Within a few minutes after birth, wildebeest calves are not only standing up, but are able to run.

The Serengeti is one of the few remaining places where it is possible to see black rhino in the wild. The park is also known for its numberous cats. Lions, cheetahs, and leopards are the big cats, with caracals, servals, and wild cats being smaller. You can find elephants, giraffes, zebras, various antelopes, warthogs, hyenas, jackels, buffalos, ostriches, crocodiles, pythons, black mambas, among numerous other animals.

The most used way to get to the Serengeti is to drive across Ngorongoro Conservation Area (but not through the crater). From Arusha this is about a 7 hours drive. Although there are some animals there, the game viewing along the way is not the best. Another way to drive would be to go up near Lake Natron near the Kenyan border then into the Lobo portion of Serengeti (northeastern Serengti). There is some cultural tourism here and Lake Natron and Oldoinyo Lengai (an active volcano) are close to this area. This drive takes about 9 hours from Arusha, but would be best to stop near Lake Natron for overnight and some walking tours/cultural tourism. Don't expect much wildlife viewing along the way. Flying into/out of the Serengeti is an option worth considering. There are several airstrips inside of the park. The planes used are small (usually with seating capacity of 18 - 20 passengers) and luggage is restricted to 15kg (including carry-on). But into central Serengeti (Seronera) there is a larger plane run by Precision Air that allows 1 bag of 23kg weight. Precison Air also flies between Seronera and Zanzibar a few times a week at a very good price.

Accommodations in the Serengeti can range from basic camping to exclusive lodges costing more than $10,000/night. Tented camps and lodges can fill quite early in Kogatende (July - September) and Ndutu (February & March). Campsites are always available for basic camping. If very short on time, it is possible to squeeze in a Serengeti safari in 3 days but it is quite tiring - lots of non-game viewing time on the road, arriving to start the game viewing when you are already tired of being in a vehicle. At least 4 days is better. To drive to the northern Serengeti, an absolute minimum of 5 days is needed. There are no basic campsites in Kogatende nor in Ndutu. You can still include those portions of the Serengeti in your camping safari, but we would have to travel a bit to get to your campsite at the end of the day. Fortunately, there is some game viewing while in transit.

In addition to standard safaris, a balloon safari is also possible. Each balloon holds 12 - 16 people. Departures are daily and the experience runs from 5am- 10am. The actual flying time is one hour. You arrive for a briefing and for the inflation of the balloon. After the flight, there is a picnic breakfast with sparkling wine included. The balloon safari price is $600/person but is a once in a lifetime experience. No night game drives in Serengeti are allowed, but some are available in the neighboring Wilderness Protected Areas. Walking safari options are extremely limited inside of the national park.

  • Along with the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater is a destination not to be missed. Named as a World Heritage Site, the NCA is not a national park. Unlike national parks, the indigenous population is still allowed to be in the area but with certain restrictions, balancing preservation, human development and tourism. The highlight is Ngorongoro Crater, the largest unbroken caldera in the world. Winding your way down the 600m walls brings you into an area amazingly dense with animals. Most of the animals here are non-migratory so this is a reliably great destination. It is easier to list what you can't find here rather than all you can find. You will not see topi, gazelle and only can spot giraffe rarely inside of the crater. It is possible to spot the "Big Five" in just a few short hours. The crater is only open from 6am until 6pm. All people (including Maasai) and vehicles must be out of the crater except during these hours since the environment is fragile. The crater is only 20km in diameter though so all will be seen in the typical 4 - 5 hours inside.

All accommodations are outside of the crater. There is enough elevation-- 2,286m (7,500 ft) at the top if the crater to feel the difference in oxygen and the chill. It also tends to be quite windy at the top so bringing sufficient layers of clothes is important for your comfort. There is a pubic campsite (Simba Campsite) and a number of lodges/tented camps inside of the conservation area. There are many more just to the east of NCA, a few kilometers outside of the boundary. These are good choices except not practical if coming from the Serengeti (west of the NCA). In addition to the daily conservation fee (entry fee $60/person + 18% VAT = $71/person), there is an additional fee for each vehicle that enters into the crater. At $250 + 18% VAT ($295 total) for each vehicle entering into the crater this makes a Ngorongoro Crater safari more pricey than other destinations. All Ark Adventures prices include all park fees, conservation fees, and taxes, so this is already calculated into any price quote. In addition to the crater itself having a restriction of people being out of the crater between the hours of 6pm until 6am each day, the entire NCA itself does not allow entry or exit from 6pm until 6am daily. Being a 5 hours drive from Moshi (3.5 hours from Arusha), this makes a day safari to Ngorongoro Crater possible but a tight schedule and tiring.

There is more to the NCA than the crater itself. On the way from the crater towards the Serengeti is Olduvai Gorge Museum ($30 + 18% VAT admission per person). Here you can learn about the findings of Drs Mary and Louis Leakey. This can be a 1 - 2 hour stopover on the way to/from the Serengeti. There are also some Maasai villages in the area to visit ($20/person). North of Ngorongoro Crater is a smaller crater, Empakai Crater. There is a chance for a short walk with a park ranger here. There is a public campsite near this area.

Mentioned in the Serengeti section is Ndutu, an area which straddles the Serengeti and NCA. During January through March this is where the Great Migration herds are located. During this time the wildebeest are giving birth. The animals wander back and forth in an unpredictable manner between NCA and Serengeti so it is best to have permits for both destinations during this time as their location can change from morning to afternoon or one day to the next. In this area are some nice tented camps but no public campsites. If on a budget safari you could visit as a day trip from your campsite.

  • This is a beautiful and underrated park with plenty of elephants and giraffe. In fact, Tarangire has the highest concentration of elephants of anywhere in Africa. This park is at its best during dry months (January - February, July - October) since the only water source in the area is the Tarangire River which winds its way through the park. The landscape is dotted with the massive and unusual baobab trees and huge termite mounds. In addition to the numerous elephants and giraffe, it is possible to find lions, buffaloes, wildebeests, zebras, hippos, various antelope species, impalas, gazelles, leopards, warthogs, monkeys, baboons, ostriches. You won't find rhino and there are almost no cheetah. The park has some nice lodges and tented camps, including some very luxurious ones. There are also some very good tented camps just outside of the park gates that have large numbers of animals wandering through. Selecting a nice accommodation in/near the park, you can spend several days in the area and not be bored at all. Walking safaris and night game drives are permitted in Tarangire. There is also an option for a balloon safari with details similar to that described in the Serengeti section above. The park is about 3.5 - 4 hours drive from Moshi, or 2 - 2.5 hours from Arusha, making it a good option for a day trip if you are short of time. Otherwise it pairs well with a trip to the Serengeti, breaking up the long drive.

  • Located along the Great Rift, this park includes the shallow soda lake Manyara. During wet season (March - May, November) this lake hosts many flamingos. The chemistry of the lake is changing so that in drier months there are no longer many flamingos at all. The park is favored greatly by bird watchers, with over over 400 species of birds present. The most numerous animals present include giraffe, zebra, lions, cheetahs, leopards, gazelle, hippos, elephants, impala, baboon and monkeys.

Two-thirds of the park consists of the lake. Night game drives, walking safaris, canoe safaris are all possible. Lake Manyara also has a Treetops Walkway. 370m long, and 18m above the ground you walk over a series of suspension bridges to observe nature. Typically, visitors spend 30 minutes - 1 hour with this activity. The cost of this activity is an additional $30/adult ($15 for children under the age of 12).

There are some good lodges inside of the park, but many more are not far outside of the park in beautiful settings.

Lake Manyara is a 2 hours drive from Arusha (3.5 hours from Moshi) and there is an airstrip very close to the national park.

  • This is a very convenient park to get to, less than one hour drive from Moshi or Arusha. But the park is not heavily visited. It has lovely landscape and contains Tanzania's second highest mountain, Mt Meru. It has large numbers of giraffes and antelopes but lacks lions, elephants, cheetahs, rhinos, and other tourist favorites. Walking safaris are an option here, with a mandatory armed park ranger. And we typically offer this destination as a day trip. Canoe safaris are also an option. Climbing Mt Meru is a lovely trek, typically done in 4 days.

There are no accommodations inside of Arusha National Park but plenty of options not far outside of the park.

  • This park is the opposite direction from Moshi/Arusha than the other parks. Situated not far from the town of Same (pronounced "SAH-may") it is not easy to pair with other safari destinations. But it makes a good day trip from Moshi (2 hours drive) and there are some "off the beated path" hiking destinations that can be added in for a multi-day itinerary. Mkomazi is one of the newer national parks in Tanzania as a result is still developing its infrasructure. But it does have a big drawing card in the inclusion of a rhino sanctuary inside of the park. So it is possible to see black rhino up close, guarenteed even. To go inside portion of the park designated as a rhino sanctuary, a morning departure in a park service vehicle with a park guide is required. It is possible to make it as a one day trip but an very early departure from Moshi (around 5am) would be required to be there in time. It would not be practical from Arusha to go as a day trip. If your schedule allows it, would be best to spend two days at the park with the morning of the second day set aside for the rhino sanctuary. In addition to the rhinos there are a good number of elephants, giraffes, zebras, various antelopes, wild dogs, lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, and buffaloes.

  • To the north of Ngorongoro Conservation Area is Ol Doinyo Lengai (mountain of god --translated from the Maasai language). This is an active volcano 2962 m ( 7,650 ft) high that is sacred to the traditional Maasai religion. For geologists this volcano is of special interest due to the unique composition of the lava. This lava is much cooler than any other (but still 600°C). it is not hot enough to give off light in the daytime but emits a dull glow at night. The lava is not thick but water-like, making it flow very quickly (and dangerously). The molten lava is black in color but solidifies into a white powder. The volcano is quite active and unpredictable. The surrounding area is very desolate, dry, dusty and hot. With daytime temperatures regularly in excess of 40°C (104°F). The mountain can be climbed in half day, but is considered the toughest climb in the country (surpassing Kilimanjaro and Mt Meru). It is steep, covered with loose gravel, dusty, without shade. Gaiters to keep stones out of your shoes are essential, plenty of water must be brought (4 - 5L recommended per person), gloves for scrambling on your hands, bandanna or face mask to filter dust and good sun protection are all vital. The local authorities require climbing with one of their local guides. They do not have any safety training or equipment, very few of them speak any English and they will climb at a very fast pace with little regard to your ability to keep up. The climb starts at midnight to avoid the scorching heat of the day. It will be cold at this time so a layer of clothing is important. Most climbers return from the climb at mid morning. We do not recommend this climb but can offer it to you with a liability waiver.

Along the Kenyan border is Lake Natron, a shallow lake with a pH of the water near that of ammonia. Nothing can survive in these waters except an algae highly favored by flamingos. At times several hundred can be seen crowding the shallow waters. A trip to Lake Natron would include walking along the lake shore, hiking at a waterfalls and cultural tourism of the Maasai community. This is truly off the beaten path in a remote, desolate, scorching hot but amazing environment. 1 - 2 days at this destination is sufficient to see all.

  • This shallow soda lake located to the east of Ngorongoro Conservation area and to the south west of Lake Manyara is home to one of the most fascinating culture tours - a visit to the Hadzabe and Datooga tribes. The Datooga are pastorialists who have also turned to some agriculture. They are a very isolated tribe, resisting outside influence and education. Only 5% speak Swahili and their literacy rate is at 1%. They are skilled craftsmen and are experts at melting scrap metal and molding arrowheads and knives which they trade with the Hadzabe tribe. Outside of this interaction, they are not a friendly tribe towards outsiders typically but will welcome your visit with a local guide. In the past young Datooga warriors would improve their status by killing any outsider. Fortunately this no longer is the case. They are a shy tribe but, when escorted by a local guide, welcomes visitors.

The Hadzabe (Hazda) are one of the last true hunter-gatherer tribes left in the world. They love their lifestyle and have completely rejected government attempts to assimilate them into modern society. Free houses and schools were left abandoned as they quickly returned to their traditional ways. They are very opportunistic, hunting anything with bow and arrow from mice to giraffe, with baboon being their favored prey. For large prey they use poison tipped arrows. Their dwellings are very primitive and temporary to the extent that if a large animal such as a giraffe is killed, they will move to the kill site rather than bring the animal to their camp. Since their huts of sticks, mud and leaves can be built in a few hours. They are experts at gathering wild honey and foraging for edible roots and berries. You can accompany them on a hunt, learn how to make fire without matches, compare your archery skills and join them in dance. They are a very friendly tribe.

The surrounding area is a very harsh environment with onion farming being the mainstay. We can arrange a visit to one of the small farms for an insight into the local life of the inhabitants.

Accommodation Types

There is a large variation in overnight accommodations while on safari. From simple sleeping tents to lodges and tented camps costing thousands of dollars a night. When considering your options, it is best to take into consideration how much time you will have at that location to enjoy the facilities. If you are arriving after dark already tired and are scheduled to depart again early the next morning, the lodge swimming pool might not be worth the price. If you are wanting a luxury experience, we can plan an itinerary to let you enjoy the accommodations more. Many of them are in such prime wildlife areas, that you can get some good game viewing sitting in front of your room/tent. For basic camping safaris, we bring a cook and food. For tented camps and lodges, they provide meals. Special meal requests can be arranged if we alert them in advance.

  • basic camping tent

For basic camping safaris, the tents are large enough for 2 sleeping bags (or camp cots) plus your gear. The guide and cook will set up the tent for you. The tents are high enough to stand up in the center, but there is no real room to walk around. You will need to bring a flashlight (torch) for lighting, insect repellant, shower slippers, and a towel. Toilet and wash facilites will be communal at the campsite.

There are really two different types of basic camping experiences. One is camping inside of the safari destinations. No one is allowed to just pitch a tent wherever they like. Only designated campsites can be used. There will be many other groups also camping in the same area. These campsites will have a caged in area for food storage and cooking. Expect just long-drop toilets and cold water showers. Some have solar heated hot water, but the demand is usually greater than the supply, so there is no guarantee of hot water. There is nothing keeping the animals out of the campsite but as long as you do not have food inside your tent, the animals will not bother you. There are safety precautions that must be heeded if going to the toilet after dark. For each campsite your guide will inform you of the procedure. It is not uncommon to hear animals during the night and occasionally you may see some during the day. There will be a cook and food brought along for your meals. The tents should be kept zipped up except for entering and exiting to keep insects and reptiles out. There will not be separate mosquito nettings, so enter and exit the tents quickly and keep them zipped up. The quality of the meals will be a pleasent surprise. The cook can handle special meals upon request (request before the start of the safari). Some people have trouble sleeping if they hear lions mating or other animal noises, but it is a memorable experience well worth the experience. In addition to the park entry fee,the government charges $35/person per night for the use of the campsite. This is already incorporated into the price quote. There are no public campsites at Ndutu portion of Serengeti/Ngorongoro nor at the Kogatende area of Serengeti. These areas are still possible to visit on a camping safari but will require travel to a different area for overnight.

The other type of camping experience is the use of private campsites outside of the safari destinations. We may use these to either reduce your cost for the safari, or in instances where the logistics makes that location the best option. The majority of these are in the town of Mto wa Mbu or Karatu. These towns are located not far from Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Lake Manyara National Park. The gates to enter into Ngorongoro Conservation Area are closed from 6pm until 6am daily. So these campsites are often used after a Tarangire or Lake Manyara safari while in transit to the Serengeti or Ngorongoro. These campsites are walled in with the wildlife limited to an occasional monkey. The facilites are much more comfortable than inside of the wildlife area: flushing toilets, hot water showers, food service, bar, and some have a swimming pool. It will feel like backyard camping. This type of camping experience may be what you would like if you need more comfort, have very young children, or are worried about animals at night. The Serengeti is too big to leave the park for overnight, so this option is limited to safaris in Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Arusha National Park, and Ngorongoro Conservation Area. If your itinerary includes an overnight at Ngorongoro coming from Serengeti, you will be inside the Conservation Area overnight. But if your overnight at Ngorongoro is coming from Lake Manyara or Tarangire, it is very possible to have overnight outside of the Conservation Area at a private campsite.

  • Sopa Lodge Ngorongoro

Lodges are just as you would expect, basically a hotel experience, but what a location and view!. Self-contained rooms with a common dining area and lounge area. Many have swimming pools. Meals at the mid-range lodges will usually be buffet style. Luxury lodges will usually have a menu and meals prepared to order. Luxury lodges likely will have options for espresso based drinks such as cappuccino. Many will have evening entertainment, usually cultural dancing and singing. There will be electricity (either solar or generator) at all lodges, internet (maybe not the fastest), some luxury lodges will offer spa services (extra cost), and some are all inclusive of drinks (premium brands at additional cost). Lodges are found both inside the safari destinations and just outside. The government charges a $71/person per night concession fee for staying at a lodge inside a safari destination. This fee will be already be included in your price quote.

  • Kubu Kubu Tented Lodge

Tented camps are a popular option. Expect room sized tents with full furniture, including bed frames with comfortable mattresses. They will be self contained with hot water showers. Many will have raised wood floors. Luxury tented camps may also have a soaking tub. Some of the luxury tented camps have started using the term "Tented Lodge" to more accurately reflect the comfort and quality. Indeed, is some it is hard to remember that they are actually just tents. Some of the luxury tented camps offer massage and spa services (additional charge). Some have all inclusive drinks (although some premium brands come with a surcharge).

All tented camps will have electricity, typically solar powered. There will be a separate dining and lounge tent. Some have swimming pools. If needing to leave your room, there will be a system in place for you to be escorted safely to your destination since animals are free to roam the area. The government charges a concesson fee of either $59/night per person (October - June) or $71/night per person (July - September). This fee is already included in your price quote.

Some tented camps in the Serengeti are temporary, moving seasonally to different locations according to the great migration. These typically are in the absolute best game viewing locations. But being seasonal, they don't have the same level of tent luxury but often the food and services are of very good quality.

Sample Safari Itineraries

We can offer safaris covering any duration of time. The longer your available time, the more individualized the itinerary will become according to your interests and according to the time of the year. We have included the most common shorter itineraries below. Treat these itineraries as a starting point and we can There are variations available especially during the birthing season of the wildebeest in February & early March and also during the migration herds Mara River crossing typically from July - October. There are also options for more cultural visits and active options.

  • To create an ideal itinerary, we first need to consider what sort of what level of luxury you prefer and how much tolerance you have for long travel times on rough roads. The amount of travel should be reduced if you are spending money on nicer accommodations. It does not make sense to spend big money if you are arriving later in the day tired then leaving early the next morning. Some of the accommodations have excellent game viewing just sitting on your veranda. Having a morning game drive, enjoying the afternoon at the accommodations, then another game drive in the late afternoon is not a bad option at all. It is your safari, so let your guide or our staff know what you like. Do not think that you need to visit as many destinations as possible. It may seem like a good idea in advance but while you are spending hours traveling from one destination to the next on rough roads, your perspective may change.

Flying into and/or out of the Serengeti is an option to consider, especially if you are visitng northern Serengeti. The one way price for a flight is roughly $400/person. But if we drive, you would be spending $71/person to cross Ngorongoro Conservation Area without any real game viewing so the price difference is only about $330/person. If you are arriving early in the day, we would need to send our guide and vehicle the day before so that would be an extra expense. Similarly, if you fly out on an afternoon flight our vehicle cannot return to Moshi the same day, there is an extra expense. For morning flights the vehicle has enough time to return the same day. We will give you specifics when we work on your itinerary.

Next we neeed to look at your desired activities. If you want some tribal visits, Oldivaai Gorge Museum, balloon safari, etc. we can plan that. If you want more physical activities such as walking or canoeing let us know and we will go over the options.

To start the process or for further information contact us at arkadventuresbooking@gmail.com

  • Day 1: After breakfast, we collect you from your hotel and proceed to Tarangire National Park for a game drive. This park is especially known for the large number of elephants and giraffe. Animals from the surrounding area congregate along the Tarangire River which winds its way through the park. The park has a large number of baobab trees and is quite scenic. We pause for a box lunch inside the park, then continue with the game drive. Late afternoon, we travel towards the camp or lodge for dinner and overnight rest.
    Drive hrs: 3-4hrs
    Meals: picnic lunch and dinner

Day 2: After breakfast, we drive to Serengeti National Park. This drive takes us through Ngorongoro Conservation Area (not through the crater but in the highlands). Once we arrive at the Serengeti, we proceed on a game drive until evening. Relaxation, dinner and overnight will be at campsite/lodge/tented camp.
    Drive hrs:6 hours
    Meals:Breakfast, picnic lunch and dinner

Day 3: Full day game viewing in the Serengeti. The park is very large but your guide will know the best locations for game viewing at that time. In the evening we will go to our evening’s accommodations for relaxation, dinner and overnight rest. Depending on the time of the year, this night will either be at the same accommodations as the previous night, or at a different location. This will be determined well before your trip date.
    Activity: full day game viewing
    Meals:Breakfast, box lunch and dinner

Day 4: After breakfast, we set out to explore of the Serengeti and view the wildlife while we make our way eventually out of the park and back into Ngorongoro Conservation Area (but not in the crater this day) where we will have dinner and overnight rest at campsite/lodge/tented camp. Note: Overnights are not permitted inside of the crater. All accommodations are outside the crater, most are near the crater rim. This is a cold location since there is some altitude (7,500 ft or 2286m). Even a knit cap and light gloves may feel welcome since it also tends to be windy.
Drive hrs: 3-7 hrs (depending on where overnight on day 3 will be spent)
Meals: brunch & dinner or breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 5: After breakfast, we will descend into Ngorongoro Crater. The concentration of animals inside of the crater is quite high and the size of the crater is such that in half day, all can be seen. At that time, we ascend out of the crater and make our way to Lake Eyasi for a cultural tour.
Drive hrs: 2-3 hrs Ngorongoro - Lake Eyasi
Meals: Breakfast, picnic lunch and dinner

Day 6: Very early morning (before sunrise) as we join the Hadzabe tribe on a hunt. Safari Accommodations

Ark Adventures offers a wide variety of safari experiences for a wide variety of budgets. Overnight accommodations can vary between basic camping to 5-star lodges and tented camps. We try to use accommodations inside of game viewing destinations. But sometimes due to logistics we might use accommodations not inside the wildlife areas.

The categories of accommodations are outlined below.

Basic Camping

camping safari - Ark Adventures

The tents used in this category are tents large enough for your gear and two camp cots/mattresses. In the center it will be high enough to stand up (maybe not fully for a tall person) but no room to walk around. There are two quite different experiences within this category. The first is where the tent is inside of a wildlife area. There are specifically designated campsites in the safari destinations so there will be many other tents near by. There is nothing keeping the animals out of the campsites and especially at night it will not be uncommon for animals to roam through the campsite but they will not disturb the tents as long as you do not have food inside. The toilets and showers are very basic (many are just long drop toilets) and are communal. Precautions need to followed if you need to use the toilet after dark. Your safari guide will give you full guidelines. Showers may have solar heating but often the demand outweighs the hot water supply. You will need to bring shower slippers, towel, and a torch/flashlight. This is an exciting experience but not necessarily the most comfortable option. There will be a camp cook accompanying the group who will make fresh meals. When traveling to a new destination the cook, camping gear, utensils and food will come along so the vehicle will be more crowded at these times. The freshness of the meals and the fact that it is cooked to order make this aspect better than a mid-range tented camp or lodge. The campsites will have a covered area for eating but there at times the insects can be an annoyance.

Sometimes a private campsite outside of a wildlife area is used. Generally this is done for logistic reasons or as a way to reduce the price you pay. These campsites are typically walled in so except for a few monkeys there will not be any wildlife. There are better amenities such as hot water showers, bar, restaurant, souvenir shop, any maybe even a swimming pool. Depending of the itinerary, we may bring a cook or we may use the camp's food service. This may feel much more like backyard camping. Overnights near the towns of Karatu or Mto wa Mbu will be at private campsites.

Tented Camps

Kati Kati Tented Camp

The term "tented camp" misleads some people into underestimating the size and comfort that these "tents" offer. Some have started using the term "tented lodge" to give a more accurate perception. These will be full height rooms, fully furnished including bed frames and mattresses. They will be self contained with hot water and electricity - typically solar powered but some still may use generators. There will be a common area with a bar, internet access, and dining area. They will have their own food service but can accommodate special diets with advance notice. Typically the food is buffet style. The more expensive tented camps may make food to order and offer items such as espresso based coffees (e.g. cappuccino). Often they offer evening entertainment - usually cultural dance and singing. Some of the more expensive ones also are priced with drinks inclusive (excepting top tier offerings). Most of these tented camps are in place year-round and the tents may have raised wooden floors.

The year-round camps may offer a swimming pool and spa-service. The remainder are seasonal, usually in the Serengeti, moving to different locations according to the wildebeest migration herds. These will not have wood flooring, but canvas flooring covered by rattan style carpet. The temporary camps cannot have the same level of physical luxury as some of the most expensive permanent camps, but often the service and food quality are very high and the locations are incredible. Kubu Kubu Tented Camp At the camps, there will not be anything keeping the animals out of the area. But there will be watchmen keeping an eye on the situation and a system of calling for an escort to go to/from the common areas.

Some tented camps are not inside the park but are located closeby, often in areas that have as many safari animals wandering around as inside of the parks. This is especially true in the Tarangire/Lake Manyara Area.

Lodges

Ark Adventures Lodge Safaris

Lodges are pretty much just as you might imagine. A hotel type layout. These will be fully furnished, with electricity, self-contained, with food service and amenities. There will be a bar, common lounge, eating area, and swimming pool. Some of these lodges can be quite large with 100 rooms. Others are rather small with just a handful of rooms in a farm house type setting especially those located outside of the parks. You can expect the amenities such as evening entertainment, free internet, some with drink inclusive pricing, spa services, and laundry service.

Large animals are less likely to roam through these areas but there will be escort service and safety measures in place. If the location is listed as Karatu or Mto wa Mbu, they will not be inside of the park but still surrounded by wilderness.
